A few weekends ago, my friend Miles gave me a tour of the 15 inch gauge Redwood Valley Railway (a.k.a. the Tilden Park Steam trains). I had not been to them since I was a little kid and the tour was amazing.
As we were walking along some service tracks to the roundhouse, the first question that I naturally asked is whether the operation was self-sustaining (since most passenger rail operations aren't). Miles not only answered that the $2 fares sustained the entire operation, but he also said that almost everything that the railroad does is in-house. The railroad machines the parts and built all of their engines from scratch. I guess that the railroad machines its parts and has volunteers really reduces the railroad's costs.
I also learned about the up and coming Mountain Division, which will bring passengers onto a hill for picnics. I learned about the extremely interesting North Point Division, which would add a four to five mile extension out into the wilderness. The route is completely graded and hopefully will be in within the next 10 years or so.
I really loved seeing the railroad again and you should visit and enjoy the 12 minute scenic ride through a miniature world. Every single building is to scale and is filled with artistic details. The railroad is a true masterpiece.
