Unit 179 on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge John Harder Collection and Photo
Starting on January 15, 1939, the [link key_system Key System], [link sacramento_northern Sacramento Northern], and the [link interurban_electric Southern Pacific Red Cars] started using railroad tracks on the Bay Bridge to bring passengers to San Francisco. Trains ran on the south side of the bridge's lower deck. They terminated at the Bay Bridge Transit Terminal at 1st & Mission Streets (also known as the Transbay Terminal). The Sacramento Northern Railway and the Southern Pacific Electric ended operations in 1941. The Key System lasted a while longer ending operation on April 20, 1958.
After the trains stopped operating and the tracks were torn up, the Transbay Terminal was converted for use by buses. There have been many plans to replace the terminal with a "state of the art" facility, but none have materialized until now. The plan can be found here.
Let's celebrate the Transbay Terminal in Downtown San Francisco. It is a shame that it is going to be torn down in the coming years. Even though the building may be outdated, a new terminal could be built somewhere else so that this fabulous one can be saved. The current terminal could be a lot like the Ferry Building is today with great shops, restaurants and more.
These photos were taken by Caltrans at the end of Bay Bridge rail service, just before the track was removed and the terminal was converted for bus use. The original photos can be found at Caltrans.
