Trans-Atlantic Cable

In the 1850s, over 100 years before the Internet, telegraph lines criss-crossed the United States. Stock prices in New York were posted in Chicago. Pork prices in Chicago were known in New York. But, to deliver information to Europe ships still had to make the 12 day trip across the Atlantic. A faster solution for Trans-Atlantic communication needed to be found.
