Bay Area Trolley Poles

Trolley Pole on Van Ness in San Francisco

Though the streetcars are gone from the East Bay, there are many small reminders of the reign of the electric trolley long ago. Odd angled buildings and trolley poles lurk in many of the parts in the city. These poles have in some cases been reused as streetlights and in other cases they have been forgotten.

The locations of poles in Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Piedmont are below. Please let me know if you know of any others.

SAN FRANCISCO

• Along Van Ness
• At Geary and Van Ness on the south east corner
• 24th and Delores
• 19th and Delores

OAKLAND (usually painted green):

• The Limert Bridge
• Trestle Glen (as you walk on Trestle Glen from Lakeshore, look to the left behind many houses and you will see the concrete line poles. There is also one in the parking lot behind the bank)
• Telegraph Avenue (poles taken out in Berkeley)
• San Pablo Avenue (poles taken out in Berkeley and many removed in Oakland's Golden Gate District)
• East 18th Street & Park Boulevard
• Claremont Avenue & Prince Street
• MacArthur Boulevard & Montana Street
• MacArthur at Bret Harte Middle School

PIEDMONT

• Highland Avenue near Sierra Avenue (painted black near the old trolley stop stairs)
• Fairview & Dale

BERKELEY

• Rose & Shattuck Avenue
